Community Garden
Welcome to the Summit Community Garden. For the 2012 growing season we have challenged ourselves to produce as much food as possible on limited grounds. To do this, we are using innovative techniques combined with existing info structure, which includes growing vertically as much as possible. When you can’t grow out; grow up! Looking around the garden you will see a bean pole tee-pee, tomato poles, and other techniques where we can use the plants to promote their natural benefits.
Come get dirty with us; all members of the community are encouraged to join in. Maintaining a community garden is a way for every individual to become involved in the process of creating food. This is a way for us to provide free, fresh, delicious, healthy food to the community and allow multiple generations of folks to interact and learn from each other. Each persons’ actions and input matters and we will not be successful without you.
Throughout the season, we will be able and delighted to share the fresh and local foods we harvested with individuals and families in the University Area community, as well as the congregation of SUMC. We will be growing; bell peppers, broccoli, carrots, chilies (jalapeño, Thai, etc), collard greens, cucumbers, herbs (basil, oregano, rosemary, thyme, etc) green beans, eggplants, garlic, golden raspberries, lettuce, snap peas, spinach, strawberries, squash, tomatoes, watermelon… and much more!
Garden projects that need to be completed:
- Cutting back overgrown trees/weeds
- Moving soil from one location to another
- Moving the existing compost piles to another location
- Ongoing weeding & watering
- Planting (seeds & seedlings)
- Researching smart planting techniques
- Transforming the space located next to/behind the garage
