Youth & Family Outreach
The Summit on 16th is located right in the heart of the University District/Weinland Park area where hundreds of students; elementary, middle, high and college students reside. In keeping with the motto, “Unity throughout the Community!” Summit’s Youth and Family Outreach (YFO) Ministry is designed to connect the bridge between the church, students & families with resources that will assist in positively developing the community.
SEQUOIA After School Empowerment Program
In association with the CDF University District Freedom Schools program, SUMC now provides a free after school program for the youth of the University District/Weinland Park community. The program, Sequoia, is named after the largest, toughest, thriving group of trees on earth. It represents Summit’s faith in the intergenerational leadership and the future growth, development and success of our young scholars. This 27-week program runs two days a week (Wednesday & Friday) through May 4, 2012. The mission of Sequoia is to create an intergenerational community where children and young adults are equipped with the necessary tools to cultivate social and personal transformation. Sequoia will focus on the following empowerment values through diverse literacy, soft skills, cooperative group activities and mental building blocks:
- Healthy eating
- Safety
- Self-determined behaviors (discipline)
- Extended education (help with math, science, reading, writing)
- Outdoor & Life skills
- Self-esteem
