Drawing on John 10 and Psalm 23, this message explores how we grow closer to God by tuning out distractions and learning to recognize and trust the voice of our Good Shepherd.

Learning to Hear the Shepherd's Voice

In this message, the speaker draws on Jesus' teaching in John 10 about the Good Shepherd, exploring what it really means to know and respond to God's voice. Just as sheep learn to recognize their shepherd's call through repeated, close contact, we too develop the ability to hear God more clearly the more time we spend with Him. The speaker uses a vivid GPS analogy to illustrate how easy it is to drown out guidance with noise and distraction — and how the signal is always there, even when we're not paying attention.

Weaving in the comfort of Psalm 23, the message encourages listeners to stop asking how little faith they can get away with and instead pursue maximum closeness with God. The more we tune in to His voice — through prayer, stillness, and practice — the more naturally we recognize it, even in crowded or chaotic moments. Like a child who knows a grandparent's voice across a noisy store, we can learn to distinguish the Shepherd's call from every other competing voice, finding safety, peace, and abundant life in following Him.

  • Jesus, the Good Shepherd, calls us by name and leads us toward life and safety.
  • Recognizing God's voice is a skill developed through consistent, close relationship with Him.
  • Distractions — like a loud radio or a busy mind — can drown out guidance that is always present.
  • The goal of faith is not minimum commitment but maximum closeness to God.
  • The more we practice listening, the more clearly and naturally we hear the Shepherd's voice.
